Re-enchantment of technique: imagination, politics and agency of images

2025

Seminar

Training programme in art, curatorship and contemporary theories.
Art Centre, National University of La Plata.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw the emergence and massification of technical images (cinema, photography, video), while the 21st century gave rise to the birth of machine images (artificial intelligence, machine learning, algorithmic complexes). In this seminar, we will see various artistic practices that show this aesthetic turn in technique. The aim is to investigate the political status of technical images and their capacity for agency in dismantling the programmes of devices, thus creating new imaginaries to those determined by technocratic progress.

I propose that if, in modernity, instrumental rationality led to a disenchantment with culture and the bureaucratisation of technological societies, in contemporary times, the opening up of images to an indeterminate topography of materials, practices and knowledge allows us to speculate on a re-enchantment with technique.
